Chapter Twenty-Two

Chase

That evening, I settle into my trailer to read the stained, wrinkled pages of the old Guardian journal. Much to my disappointment, half of it covers information about dancing the Night. I’ve never used that technique to purify an Alicorn before, but the Guardians writing this have. It’s a deep, soul connection dance.

Would it work for Lauren?

What would it do to Thash’s Alicorns?

I rub my eyes, rise from the couch, and go to get a drink of water. A shadow moves outside the window over the sink. I freeze, holding the water un-swallowed in my mouth, and watch the figure approaching. It’s Mrs. Tracey. I swallow and breathe in deep. My lungs are burning from the sudden onset of panic.

Every inch of my body is on edge.

There’s a soft knock on my door.

Even though I know she’s coming, I still jump. Smoothing my hair, I go to the door and open it up for Mrs. Tracey. Her bright, green eyes warm me. As she smiles, I picture her as my real grandmother, and my tension eases.

I step back to allow her inside.

“I trust you had a good trip,” she says, hobbling up the stairs and shuffling through the door. She sets her black coat down on one of the kitchen chairs and pulls her green sweater down over the waistband of her jeans.

“It was amazing,” I whisper.

She lifts her head and looks at me. Silent understanding passes between us. Behind her smile, I can almost see her remembering the rolling mountains of Agalrae, filled with galloping Alicorns.

“And did you find what you were looking for?” she asks, sitting down in the same chair she swung her coat over.

“Yes and no.”

She chuckles. “Isn’t that the answer every time.” She points at the journal in my hands. “What do you have there?” She leans back and forth, trying to get a better look at the little, leather book.

“I found it in the records room.” I give it over to her for inspection.

She flips through the pages quickly, and then bursts out laughing. “I never thought I’d see this again.” Lost in a scene I can’t see, she shakes her head, and then hands the book back to me. “Ryan and I spent our married years in Agalrae writing that together. After our children were born, we’d visit Agalrae every summer to reconnect with the other Guardians there.”

Her eyes turn distant. “We were so young then, wild, and full of life. I was always experimenting with the Creator’s light. Bit by bit, though, the more time I spent in this realm, the more I changed. I became lax, and then the enemy started picking off the others one by one…”

In her lap, she opens and closes her fingers. “I’m sure you understand what a torment it is to have such a gift, and yet be unable to use it.”

I sit down in the chair next to her and set the book between us. “Is there anything in here that can help me get through to Lauren?”

Mrs.
